The two products we recommend:
*
Big Y 700 Test, https://www.familytreedna.com/products/y-dna – Big Y has the most detailed haplogroup information available. What sorts of things can you find out with Big Y? The North Mercia Project is a good example: https://www.familytreedna.com/groups/r-a6093-north-mercia/dna-results

Many Hydes in the US trace their ancestry back to groups who arrived in New England and Virginia in the early part of the 17th century. Some of the people in these groups are so closely related that they will show up as identical in many autosomal DNA tests as well as Y-DNA up through 111 markers. Using Big Y, we now know which immigrant ancestors the people in these groups descend from, and have been able to make determinations concerning where and when their common ancestor lived in England. Dan Hyde wrote a short paper on Why It’s Important to Take a Big Y Test.

Family Finder Test, currently only $59 on sale https://www.familytreedna.com/products/family-finder If your haplogroup appears in RED on our results page, it means that it’s predicted rather than confirmed, based on your marker values. Think of a haplogroup as a sort of postal address. Saying someone has a haplogroup of R-M269 is like saying a person has a postal address of “USA”. Family Finder will not give you haplogroup results as precise as Big Y, but it’s an intermediate step that will help us group you with those who are likely to share some of your paper trail.
